Combinations of good GCSEs are needed in science and mathematics for young people to progress to careers in engineering. This report examines national and regional participation and attainment in science and mathematics across England in 2010. We find significant differences in participation in science and mathematics across many regions of England and ask the question, is this because of opportunity or ability?
